Caption: MODEL RELEASED. Enlarged tonsil (pink, centre) of a 12 year old child. At this age the tonsil should have shrunk to a small nodule (although tonsils this size are normal at the ages of five and six). The tonsils are masses of lymphoid tissue, which help the body fight infections, particularly of the upper respiratory tract. In this case the enlargement was due to repeated throat infections. If the swelling of a tonsil causes breathing or swallowing problems then it is generally removed surgically.
