Caption: MODEL RELEASED. Unilateral tonsil enlargement in an eleven year old girl. Enlargement of the tonsils is usually due to viral or bacterial infection, and most commonly affects both equally. Symptoms include a sore throat and fever. Treatment is with painkillers, and antibiotics in the case of bacterial infection. The tonsils are not generally removed, but in severe cases this may be the only option. The tonsils are masses of lymphoid tissue, part of the immune system, which help protect the throat and respiratory tract from infectious organisms.
