Caption: MODEL RELEASED. Inflamed tonsil in a 9-year-old girl's throat. The inflamed tonsil is the large red swelling at the back of the throat, behind the tongue and the uvula (structure hanging from the roof of the mouth). This is unilateral tonsillitis, where only the tonsil area on one side of the throat is inflamed. The tonsils are areas of lymphoid tissue either side of the throat. They can become swollen in response to an infection, and if this happens regularly, they may be removed.
