This image is part of the feature The Free Electron Laser

Caption: Free electron laser accelerator. Technicians work on the superconducting accelerator used by the free electron laser. Consisting of eight cavities cooled by liquid helium to -272 degrees celsius, this device accelerates electrons until they have an energy of 42 million electron volts. These form a continuous beam which enters a wiggler (not seen here) which uses a varying magnetic field to cause the electrons to produce light. This light is collected and amplified to produce an intense beam of light by the laser. The wavelength of the light emitted by the electrons can be altered by chang- ing either the field strength within the wiggler or the energy of the electrons as they enter it.
