Caption: This sagittal (from the side) MRI of the brain shows small nodular subependymal densities projecting into the lateral ventricles.These represent subependymal tubers (hamartomas). This is from a person with Tuberous Sclerosis which is one of the neuroectodermal dysplasias. It consists of the triad of seizures, adenoma sebacum, mental retardation. Intracranially it is characterized by the presence of multiple tubers which are hamartomatous lesions in the corical/subcortical regions and in the periventricular regions. They may calcify as in this case. When they demonstrate contrast enhancement they are considered to be neoplastic in nature. Those that enhance around the foramen of Monroe are often giant cell astrocytomas.
