It is characterised by itchy wheals, raised white or yellow lumps, surrounded by an area of red inflammation. The cause of urticaria is often not known. Chemicals such as food additives or colorants and drugs such as penicillin and aspirin are known to cause this allergic reaction. Urticaria may also be caused by exposure to heat, cold or sunlight.
