Caption: Pressure sore. View of a large pressure sore (or bedsore) on a patient's buttock. Pressure sores are caused by constant pressure and chafing of the skin in patients who are immobilised. The condition is particularly prevalent in patients recovering from strokes or spinal injury, as pain sensation in the skin may have been lost. Here, the bedsore is on the verge of ulceration. Treatment at this stage is with antiseptic creams, a rigourous cleanliness regime and frequent change of position to relieve local pressure.
