Caption: Chronic leg ulcer. This chronic venous leg ulcer has poorly healing, irregular margins. The base and sides of the ulcer are yellow and infected. The surrounding area is red and inflamed. The general condition of the skin is brittle and flaking. The ulcer (gravitational or hypostatic venous) has been caused by high venous pressure, a result of inadequate muscle pump activity. Blood proteins leak out of the vessels, preventing sufficient oxygen supply to the tissues. The overlaying skin breaks down to form an ulcer. Healing is slow. Treatment is to elevate and exercise the legs and apply simple dressings.
