Caption: Varicose ulcers. Abstract illustration of varicose ulcers in a human leg. Two large red ulcers are shown in circles. A diagram of the venous system in the leg appears in the background, with a large swollen varicose vein. Leg ulcers are chronic open sores caused by poor blood supply in the leg. In this case they have been caused by varicose veins, where valves inside the vein fail to work, preventing blood from draining properly from the lower leg. Affected veins become engorged with blood and swollen. Treatment for varicose veins depends upon their severity. Some patients benefit from exercising and wearing an elastic stocking, while others require surgery.
