Caption: Gastric ulcer. Coloured Scanning Electron Micrograph (SEM) of a gastric ulcer seen developing in the stomach of a patient. The lining of the stomach, made up of mucus-making epithelial cells (known as the mucosa) is the folded red area. At upper centre the lining has eroded at the site of the ulcer, exposing the lattice-shaped epithelial cells. At top left a red mass made up of blood and mucus is seen. Mucus protects the stomach lining from the acid and digestive enzymes in the stomach cavity. Without the mucus producing epithelium, digestive enzymes attack the stomach lining and create this type of ulcer. Magnification: x470 at 6x7cm size.
