Caption: Urticaria. View of the arm of a three month old baby boy showing an extensive urticaria rash. Urticaria is characterised by the appearance of itchy pale areas surrounded by red inflammation. Urticaria is also known as hives, or nettle rash. It has many causes, including stress, heat, cold or sunlight, but most commonly it is caused by an allergic reaction. This may be due to an ingredient in a food (such as an artificial colouring), the food itself (such as shellfish or eggs), or to a drug (such as aspirin). The condition usually clears up naturally after a few hours, although calamine lotion or antihistamine drugs may be used to reduce the itching.
