Caption: Diabetic foot ulcer. Gamma scans of two views of an ulcer on a foot of a patient with diabetes. The scans detect gamma radiation from a radioactive isotope that is injected into the bloodstream. The scan has revealed the decreased blood supply to the ulcerated area (yellow/red/pink area with a black centre). Ulcers are a possible complication of diabetes, a condition in which the patient is unable to metabolise blood sugars properly. Damage to the blood vessels can lead to ulcers and tissue death. This patient has already had two necrotic toes amputated. The ulcer (outer side of right foot) is seen from the side (left) and front (right).
