Caption: MODEL RELEASED. Urticaria rash. Itchy, red rash (weals) on the face of a three-year-old girl. The weals are a symptom of urticaria and are a response to a number of factors, which include food, drugs or temperature. In this case the cause is unknown (idiopathic). When stimulated, cells release substances that cause small blood vessels to leak fluid into the skin. The resulting weals may last for a few minutes or several hours. Treatment is with antihistamines and avoidance of the cause, if known.
