Caption: Xanthelasma: a yellow swelling in the skin of the lower eyelid resulting from deposition of fat in the skin. Xanthelasma is common in elderly people, but is of little more than cosmetic importance. Severe cases are seen in certain disorders of fat metabolism. Fat deposits in the skin are generally termed xanthomata, and their presence is usually accompanied by a raised blood cholesterol level. In this case the patient was anaemic with a high blood cholesterol level.
