Caption: Allergy testing of hair dyes, showing skin inflammation caused by three different hair dyes. Cosmetics applied to the skin are potentially a major cause of dermatitis. Incidence of disease is higher in developing countries than in more technically-advanced ones, where the cosmetics industry has made more resources available for the screening of allergy-inducing substances. Hair bleaches such as ammonia persulphate commonly cause immediate wealing of the scalp. In developing countries, the dye paraphenylenediamine may induce dermatitis that affects the eyelids and face as well as the scalp.
