Caption: Insect bite allergy. Close-up of an adult's eye, showing the eyelid swollen and inflamed due to an allergy to an insect bite. An insect bite provokes an allergic reaction in a patient whose immune system is triggered by substances in the insect's saliva or faeces. Symptoms vary from an innocuous rash or pimples to painful, itchy swellings. Treatment includes washing the bitten area with soap and water, and applying a soothing ointment (such as calamine). Allergic reactions are usually localised, but in severe cases they can lead to anaphylactic shock, where symptoms are widespread and can be life-threatening.
