Caption: Make-up allergy. Close-up of the face of a woman whose eyelids have become puffy, red and watery as a result of allergy to eyelid make-up. The tissue around her eyes is severely inflamed, leaving the eyes barely open. The symptoms of an allergy are caused by the body's immune system mistaking harm- less substances for disease-causing organisms. An- tibodies in the body detect the allergen to which the patient is sensitized and then trigger the re- lease of a chemical called histamine, which prod- uces an inflammation. The most effective treatment for an allergy is to avoid the cause. Antihista- mine drugs and corticosteroid drugs may help to relieve the symptoms.
