Caption: Seaweed allergy. An inflamed rash with blisters on the forearm, caused by an allergic reaction to seaweed. The symptoms of an allergy are caused by the body's immune system mistaking harmless substances for disease-causing organisms. Anti- bodies in the body detect the allergen to which the patient is sensitized and trigger the release of a chemical called histamine, which produces an inflammation. It causes dilation of the blood vessels of the skin (hence the reddening) and more fluid leaks into the tissues causing swelling and blisters. The most effective treatment is to avoid the allergen. Antihistamine drugs and cortico- steroid drugs may help to relieve the symptoms.
