Caption: Insect bite blister. Close-up of a blister (bulla) on human skin following an insect bite. The large, fluid-filled, orange swelling is surrounded by pink, inflamed skin. Insect bites are made by blood-sucking insects such as gnats or mosquitos. The skin reaction is primarily an allergic response to substances in the insect's saliva or faeces (which may be deposited near the bite and then rubbed in by scratching). Reactions vary from person to person, even to the same biting species. Blisters contain sterile fluid that protects the underlying damaged tissue. They should not be burst as this can lead to infection.
