Caption: MODEL RELEASED. Bee sting. Swelling round the right eye due to a bee sting. Bee stings can cause pain, redness and swelling for up to 48 hours. This is due to sensitization of the immune system to bee venom on a previous occasion. The venom is recognised as a foreign substance and triggers an inappropriately vigorous inflammatory response, mediated by body substances such as histamine. This kind of hyper- sensitive reaction is called an anaphylactic response, the commonest type of allergic reaction. If the hypersensitivity is extreme, the victim may die of shock unless adrenaline is administered. Treatment for stings includes removing the sting, washing the wound and taking painkillers.
