Caption: Bullous insect bite. Close-up of a bullous insect bite. This bite has blistered and become filled with fluid. Antihistamine drugs may be used to treat the swelling. Fluid-filled blisters should not generally be burst, as the fluid inside is sterile, and protects the skin underneath it from becoming infected. Insect bites usually cause no more than discomfort, but some people are hyper- sensitive to them, and a bite or sting can cause an acute shock reaction, which is a life- threatening condition.
