Caption: Mosquito bite. Close-up of an aggravated mosquito bite on a patient's skin showing localised inflam- mation. The bite is a small raised and reddened area which is usually itchy. Mosquitoes are blood- drinking insects. Their saliva contains an anti- clotting agent. The inflammation seen here may be due to an allergic reaction to the mosquito's saliva, or because the area has been scratched. Mosquitoes may transmit diseases, acquiring infec- tious organisms from infected human or animal blood, and transferring them to another person during a later bite. Anopheles, Aedes and Culex are the main disease-transmitting mosquitoes, carrying malaria and yellow fever, amongst others.
