Caption: MODEL RELEASED. Insect bite allergy. Buttock and thigh of a 15 year old girl showing a severe red rash caused by an allergy to insect bites. In this case, the girl sat on an ant's nest and was bitten several times. The skin reaction is an allergic response to substances in the insects' saliva or to any chemicals they may use in a sting. Antihistamine drugs are used to reduce the allergic response, and soothing creams such as calamine may reduce itching. The type of reaction depends on the individual bitten, some people show no reaction at all, while others may suffer a potentially fatal anaphylactic shock.
