Allergy testing. Young boy having drops of various allergens applied to pricked skin on his back. Allergens, such as pollen, dust and fungal spores, may be tested this way. Any skin inflammation indicates an immune response, showing the patient may be allergic to that particular substance. Skin prick tests help to identify allergens that cause conditions like asthma or allergic rhinitis (hay fever). Knowing which substances can provoke a reaction allows them to be avoided.
