Cat allergy. Young boy suffering from an allergic reaction to a pet cat. He is wiping his eye, which is watering. This reaction is caused by the effect of hairs and dust from the cat on the boy's immune system, which has mistaken them for invading organisms. Mucus and tears are then produced to expel any tiny particles of cat hair or dust. This is known as a hyper- sensitivity reaction. Treatment is generally to avoid the object causing the reaction, but antihistamine drugs can be used in more severe cases.
