Caption: MODEL RELEASED. Hay fever. Eyes of a 15-year-old girl suffering from periorbital oedema and allergic conjunctivitis as a result of hay fever. Hay fever is a very common allergic response to airborne particles, such as pollen. When allergens come into contact with the eyes, they can provoke this exaggerated response from the immune system. Periorbital oedema is the collection of fluid around the eye sockets, giving the eyes a swollen and puffy appearance. Allergic conjunctivitis is the inflammation of the conjunctiva, the clear membrane covering the eye. It causes the eyes to become red, watery and sore. Treatment for hay fever is with anti-histamines.
