Caption: Jellyfish sting. Red rash caused by a jellyfish sting on a 39-year-old man's foot. This image was taken ten days after the man was stung. Jellyfish are marine organisms whose tentacles contain stinging capsules that discharge when touched. The severity of the sting depends upon the species that inflicted it. Treatment includes applying vinegar to the rash to inactivate the stinging capsules, and removing remaining tentacle fragments with adhesive tape or tweezers. Specific antivenoms are available for the more dangerous species' toxins.
