Caption: Jefferson Lab accelerator. View along a beam recombination section of the accelerator at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility, or Jefferson Lab. The accelerator ring is racetrack- shaped, and about 1. 4 kilometres long. Electrons introduced into the accelerator travel round the racetrack up to five times, reaching speeds close to that of light and energies of around 4 billion electron volts (GeV). Electrons travelling around the curved ends use one of five beam pipes depending on their energy, then are recombined for the straight acceleration sections. Jefferson Lab is at Newport News, Virginia, USA.
