Caption: Anal fissure with ulcer. A small fissure (tear) in the skin lining the anus has resulted in ulcer formation (seen to the right of the anal opening). Anal fissures are usually caused by straining to pass hard, dry faeces. The tear may become infect- ed or, owing to movements of the sphincter muscle, will not heal. Ulcer treatment, prevention against infection, cleanliness, and methods to soften the faeces, enable this injury to heal.
