Caption: Sprained ankle. Swollen left ankle (at right) due to a sprain. A sprain is a tearing or stretching of the ligaments that hold together the bone ends in the joint. The fibrous capsule that encloses the joint may also be damaged. The most common site for a sprain is the ankle. An X-ray of the ankle is taken to exclude the possibility of a fracture. Treatment includes reducing swelling with icepacks, resting the joint and using painkilling drugs.
