Caption: Dislocated kneecap. Coloured X-ray of the knee seen from the side, showing a dislocated kneecap (upper right, blue). The tough ligament that conn- ects the kneecap to the shin bone (lower left) has torn, allowing the kneecap to ride up the front of the leg. The large central bone is the femur, or thigh bone. This very painful condition resulted from a severe injury, and was probably accompanied by fracture of some of the bones associated with the knee. Treatment for dislocation involves man- ipulating bones back into position under anaes- thetic and immobilising the joint in a cast while it heals.
