Caption: MODEL RELEASED. Facial nerve damage. Facial deformity in an 18-year-old boy caused by a nerve injury during a road traffic accident. The boy also sustained a fractured skull. The effect of nerve injury depends on whether the nerve is completely severed. Complete severence results in total loss of function. If the nerve is partly severed but still aligned then nerve fibres can regenerate. Microsurgery is sometimes carried out to rejoin severed nerve fibres but recovery is rarely complete.
