Caption: Muscle wasting in hand. Wasting of the interosseous muscles in a man's left hand (at right) caused by damage to the ulnar nerve. The metacarpal bones of the palm appear unusually prominent due to loss of muscle tissue between them. The thenar prominence, the large muscle at the base of the thumb, is especially affected. The ulnar nerve controls movement of the fingers and thumb.
