Caption: Broken arm. Coloured X-ray of a compound fracture to the radius and ulna lower arm bones. At left is the humerus bone of the upper arm. Attached to this are the radius (upper right) and ulna (lower right) forearm bones. Both the radius and ulna are fractured, in which sharp broken ends of each bone have separated and may pierce the skin. This is known as a compound fracture. The larger radius is aligned with the thumb of the hand. Most fractures are caused by sudden injury that exerts more force on the bone than it can withstand. X-ray confirms the diagnosis. This fracture may be repaired by surgery to realign and immobilize the bones.
