Caption: Torn achilles tendon. Coloured magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan of an injured ankle showing damage to the achilles tendon. This is a tearing of the achilles tendon, which links the muscles in the calf (not seen) with the calcaneus (heel bone, red, lower centre). The damage is indicated by the black arrow (upper centre), which points at the tear in the tendon. The tendon (blue) runs vertically down from the tear. Achilles tendon ruptures can occur during running or jumping, and usually cause inflammation and pain. These symptoms can usually be cleared up with rest and physiotherapy. More serious ruptures may require surgical repair.
