Caption: Fracture repairs. Artwork of repairs to a fractured femur and ilium. The femur (thigh-bone, at left) has been surgically immobilised by the insertion of a long metal pin fixed to the bone with a metal screw. The femur fracture is near the head of the shaft. The ilium, part of the pelvis, is also fractured at the top, the iliac crest (at upper right). Here a ribbon has been used to bind the two broken pieces of bone into their correct positions. The bone will then be able to heal naturally back to its full strength. Fractures occur when the bone is subjected to extreme force. In most cases the bone ends are highly displaced, causing severe pain and swelling.
