Caption: Broken toe. View of the big toe of a 57 year old man showing extensive bruising caused by a fracture of the toe. Fractures of the toes are fairly common. Here, the injury has ruptured several blood vessels in the toe, allowing blood to leak into the surrounding tissues. A large blood blister (black) has formed at lower centre. Toes, especially the big toe, are used for balance while walking. An injury such as this may make walking very painful. Crutches may be required until the toe has healed. Broken toes are usually immobilised, and heal well in a few weeks.
