Caption: Healing wound. Artwork of three stages in the healing of a surgical wound. A stitch (suture) is seen beneath the wound in the first two images. At the top is the first stage in healing, where the cut is plugged with a clot (red). After a few days, fibrin (white), a fibrous protein, begins to bind the two edges together, blood vessels begin to regrow, and cells grow along the fibrin strands. This stage lasts around two or three weeks. In the lower artwork, when the suture has been removed, blood vessels have regrown, and all that remains is a white area of scar tissue. This gradually fades with time.
