Caption: Spinal cord injury. Coloured magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan of a sagittal section through a human neck showing injury to, or degeneration of, the spinal cord. The spinal cord has been pinched (at centre, pink) and misshapen vertebral bones are pressing against it. Part of the jaw in profile is at upper left and the cerebellum of the brain is at upper right. The spinal cord runs from the brain downwards, with square-shaped vertebral bones to its left. Pinching of the spinal cord may cause nerve damage, pain, or even paralysis. This may be due to a whiplash injury or the result of bone degeneration due to arthritis of the neck or osteoporosis (brittle bone disease).
