Caption: Pinned femur fracture. Coloured X-ray of a pinned fracture of the femur caused by osteoporosis (brittle bone disease). The femur (thigh-bone, down centre) has had long metal pins (white) surgically inserted into it. The upper pin has been screwed into the neck of the femur (upper centre) where it articulates with the pelvis (top right) to form the hip joint. Broken bones must be realigned and held in place to ensure that they can heal properly. Osteoporosis is characterised by weaker bones that are more liable to fracture.
