Self-inflicted injury. Coloured image of self- inflicted lacerations on the arm of a male psychiatric patient. Self-injury or self- mutilation is most common in young adults with personality disorders. Reasons for the behaviour include aggressive impulses, relief of tension and sadomasochistic tendencies. In patients with learning difficulties it may also be a means of gaining attention.
