Caption: MODEL RELEASED. Spine fracture. Computed tomography (CT) scan of a section through a fractured vertebra (upper centre) of a 39-year-old woman. The spinal runs down the channel (black hole) at centre. The fracture, seen as dark lines in the white bone, was caused by a fall. The severity of the injury depends on what if any damage was caused to the spinal cord, which runs through the vertebral column. CT scans use X-rays to form slice images of the body.
