Caption: MODEL RELEASED. Surgical wound treatment. Nurse using a syringe to wash & clean a large perianal post-surgical wound in a 43-year-old woman. The wound, in the region surrounding the anus, resulted from surgery to remove the rectum. This operation is called proctectomy, and was done due to the presence of a cancerous object known as a dermoid cyst. The wound must be kept clean to prevent an abscess (infected area) forming. The wound will eventually heal, but complications often develop, such as the formation of an anal fistula, where an abnormal external opening develops. Diversion of the faeces into a colostomy bag may help prevent infection. Analgesic drugs are used to treat the pain.
