Caption: Frostbitten ear. Blister on the pinna of the ear caused by frostbite. Frostbite damages the body's tissues by the formation of ice crystals during freezing. The fingers, toes and the face are most often affected. Frostbite is classified by degrees in the same manner as burns. Superficial second degree frostbite, such as this, is characterized by the formation of clear blisters within 12 hours. Treatment is by gently warming the frostbitten parts in tepid water. Precautions are required against bacterial infection, to which frostbitten skin is susceptible.
