Caption: Evisceration injuries. Girl with intestines (pink, upper right and lower left) bulging out of wounds to her abdomen. The intestines and other abdominal organs are held in place by the peritoneal sac and the muscles of the abdominal wall and back. When these containing structures are severely injured, gravity and pressure will cause the intestines, which are closest to the surface, to spill out of the body. This is similar to what happens when a hernia develops, except that the skin is intact in a hernia. Infection is a major concern. Treatment is by surgical replacement and repair. Causes of the injuries could range from a traffic accident to being gored by a bull. Photographed in Africa.
