Caption: Muscle injury. Coloured magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan of a torn calf muscle (bulge on the right side of the leg at lower left). The calf at the back of the lower leg is actually made up of seven muscles. Two of these, the gastrocnemius and the soleus, are most prone to tear. If the muscles are tight they may rupture with sudden movement or impact, such as may be sustained during some sports. Treatment is by resting the muscle, applying ice and compression, and elevating the limb. Strengthening and stretching exercises may help to prevent recurrence.
