Caption: MODEL RELEASED. Perforated eardrum. Bleeding ear of a 14-year-old female patient following perforation of the eardrum with a cotton bud. The eardrum (tympanic membrane) is a thin skin-covered membrane between the external ear canal and the middle ear. It transmits sound by vibration. Perforation of the eardrum consequently reduces the sound transmission of the ear. A perforated eardrum should heal within a month or so, but if badly damaged may require surgery (myringoplasty or tympanoplasty). The use of cotton buds to clean the ears is not generally recommended by doctors because of the risk of damage to the eardrum.
