Caption: Brain bruising. Sectioned gross specimen of a brain showing an area of bruising (black caused by a head injury. A blow to the head can rupture blood vessels in the brain, leading to leakage (haemorrhage). If the blood loss is small there may be no symptoms. A clot can put pressure on adjacent parts of the brain, causing a variety of symptoms depending on the region affected. Typical symptoms can include headaches, seizures and speech difficulties. Larger losses can deprive parts of the brain of blood, and therefore oxygen, which leads to a stroke.
