Caption: MODEL RELEASED. Broken hip. 70-year-old man with a fracture through the neck of his left thigh bone (femur) causing a shortening of the leg. This fracture, called a broken hip, is very common in the elderly and those with osteoporosis. Surgery may be required to realign the bone ends. A fracture of the neck of the femur can damage blood supply to the head of the femur, which may then crumble. If this happens the whole hip joint is removed and replaced with an artificial joint.
