Caption: Slipped discs. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan of the neck of a patient showing a double slipped disc. This is a side view, with the front of the body at left. The slipped (prolapsed) discs are at lower centre, and are seen compressing the spinal cord (grey), which runs down to the right of the block-shaped parts of the spinal bones (vertebrae). Intervertebral discs are rubbery cartilaginous pads that cushion the vertebrae and give the neck and back flexibility. They can become prolapsed due to an injury or mechanical stress. This can cause pain and numbness in the region below the prolapse. Treatment is with bed rest.
